Sustainability is
a significant requirement in the current building practices, in particular
in reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes.
Since
the late 1980s, the influence of human activity on the global environment
has been discussed at international summits. In 1987, the
Brundtland Commission
i what is probably the most commonly cited
definition of sustainability. According to this commission, a sustainable
activity “meets the needs of the present generation without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (Brundtland
Commission, Our Common Future, 1987)
Building on that, we understand the
concept of sustainability in
a holistic- all comprising sense, including technical, environmental,
economic, social/cultural, and institutional
aspects.
The
Brundtland statement defines
sustainability as
an overall goal but does not provide guidance on how to achieve it. If sustainability is
to be attained, it is necessary to establish specific objectives with
related indicators through which progress towards greater sustainability
can be measured.
