The
Sustainable
Building
Assessment Methodology (SBAM) - formerly
SBET - is a quick and practical method for enhancing
sustainable development. This includes assessment of building practices
and selection of sustainable technologies and materials.
SBAM
provides decision-makers and programme managers with reliable information
about the sustainability of their activities. This has gained great
relevance in particular in post-disaster reconstruction activities
(Tsunami projects).
SBAM
is based on a participatory workshop approach taking into account not only
technical, environmental, economic, but also social and institutional
aspects of sustainable development. Stakeholders establish quantitative
and qualitative indicator sets, assess, and develop
solutions.
SBAM
was designed by
SKAT and
Development Alternatives
(
India)
between 2001 and 2005 through a series of workshops, held in
India,
Cuba and
South
Africa. Desk
research and field-testing was conducted by a network of practitioners and
led to the development of an effective methodology.
The
SBAM- online application has been developed together with
Neeti Solutions
(
India).
Support
received by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
(SDC) has played a crucial role in providing continuity to the
SBAM initiative.
The
basin
South
Asia platform,
currently managed by Development Alternatives, facilitated the initiative
in
India.
